Ohio Hills Health Services Sponsors Free Community Swim

Posted 07/23/19

In recognition of National Health Care Center Week, Ohio Hills Health Center is offering a free community swim at the Monroe Memorial Park on Wednesday, August 7th from 6-8 PM. Everyone is welcome!

“Our mission is to improve the health of the community,” said Jeff Britton, C.E.O, Ohio Hills Health Services. “One of our board members suggested a community swim as a way to bring the community together and to be physically active. We thought it was a great idea.”

In conjunction with the community swim, information will be provided regarding the importance of skin screenings. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Just a few serious sunburns can increase a child’s risk of skin cancer later in life. Anyone can get skin cancer but reducing exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can help keep your skin healthy and lower the chances of getting skin cancer in the future.

Physical Activity is one of the best things people can do to improve their health and swimming is great exercise. Adults should strive for 150 minutes of exercise a week and two days of muscle-strengthening activity. Kids and teens ages 6 to 17 need 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

“Only half of adults get the physical activity they need to help reduce and prevent chronic diseases,” said Russell Lee-Wood, Medical Director, Ohio Hills Health Services. “Exercise can make people feel better, function better, and sleep better and reduces the risk for serious health problems like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some cancers. Offering a free swim is a wonderful way to promote exercise.”

The free community swim is open to everyone, families, children and older adults. However, the Monroe Memorial Park Pool capacity is 140 people.

Free skin screenings will be available following this event at the Monroe Family Health Center on October 2nd and at the Barnesville Family Health Center on September 5th. Screenings are by appointment and available to anyone in the community.  Please call 740-239-6447 to schedule your appointment.
